How to Get Started

You need to:

Be at least 17 and have a provisional driving licence  - application forms available from your post office,or

Apply Online:  http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Motoringtransactions/DG_10032681 

Satisfy the examiner that in good daylight you can read a vehicle number plate with letters 79.4mm (3.1in) high at a minimum distance of 20.5 metres (about 67 feet).

Take and pass the theory test before applying for the practical test.

As a holder of a provisional driving licence  your vehicle must show L-plates (D-plates in Wales) at the front and rear. You must have a qualified driver with you who is at least 21 years of age and who has held a full licence in that category for at least three years.   You are not allowed to drive on a motorway unless you are a learner lorry or bus driver or learning to drive a car and trailer( B + E).
